Introduction to R

Introduction to R In-Person

*Registration will begin staring July 27*

We will cover the Data Carpentries Lesson - R for Social Scientists lesson, which uses a dataset familiar to those working with social data. However, the skills learnt are applicable to all disciplines and thus we encourage participants from all fields to register.

This workshop is designed for graduate students, postdocs, and others engaged in data analysis, especially those who are either new to R or those with some experience seeking to strengthen their foundational skills. We won’t cover more complex processes or analyses such as statistics, since that requires additional teaching, but after the workshop you should be able to modify code from others for your own work or confidently enroll in classes requiring R experience.

Here's what you can expect to learn in the lessons:

Day 1:

·       Setting up R (install software, understand R-studio, packages, load data)

·       Introduction to R (basic operations, create objects, transform objects, subset data)

·       Starting with Data (exploratory data analysis, data types and formats)

Day 2:

·       Data Wrangling with dplyr (create new data columns, group and summarize data)

·       Data Wrangling with tidyr (work with long and wide table formats)

·       Data Visualization with ggplot2 (create different types of plots)
